I took this back in 2014. Believe it or not it was on a 12 hour layover flying from #Sydney to #LosAngeles.⁠ It's also a 5 shot pano so GET SWIPING. •⁠⠀ It was the beginning of a trip around the world and while looking at possible flights a very cheap and not so direct option via Beijing popped up.⁠⠀ •⁠⠀ I was fortunate to visit Beijing previously during the 2008 Olympic Games and my only main regret that stuck with me from that once in a lifetime experience was not making it to The Great Wall. This was a sign. ⁠⠀ •⁠⠀ Given I wasn't in any major rush on when to leave Australia or get to LA, this gave me an opportunity to spin my wheels in Beijing for the day. ⁠⠀ •⁠⠀ First thing I did when I landed was stored my carry on for the day and hired a driver and b-lined it to The Wall for the morning.⁠⠀ •⁠⠀ From there I was able to spend the rest of the day reliving moments from my last trip, rehashing great times with friends and family. I was unfortunately not able to make his wedding, another friend of mine was getting married on the same day, so was very fortunate to join in for a boys weekend. • Sun, surf, beaches, bikes, beers, boats. New friends and old. • This little township at the edge of a peninsula in a very remote part of Vancouver Island feels like a movie set. I think I’ve posted Panos from this stadium a few times now. But it’s because it’s a pretty epic spot. No matter where you are you have an insane spectacle. This is from where the “bleacher creatures” live. Right behind the opposing teams bill pen. Close enough that no matter what the rowdy fans yell - the whole team warming up to pitch can hear. This question has come up a lot recently: is social media bad for us? • I was listening to the podcast First Contact by @lauriesegall the other day. It was with Instagram’s CEO @mosseri and dove into discussions on @instagram’s major moves of recent. At one point they highlighted the fact that we don’t yet know if social media is good or bad for humans (or humanity)... & we aren’t going to know this definitively for a long time. • One thing a lot of people my age & older still haven’t grasped yet is there are now adults who don’t know of a world before the internet (”the digital first generation”). Through our technological advancements they don’t know a life before social media. • Yesterday I drove from New York to Toronto. I typed in an address and Google navigated. Back in the day, at least one person needed to be the navigator which meant sustaining a sense of awareness for hours. Gen Z won’t know the pain (and hilariousness) of being absolutely lost in the middle of nowhere (I remember being so lost we didn’t know which of 3 States we were in). Navigation is no longer a mandatory skill to acquire, no attention necessary. • Technological advancements like @google & Google Maps paved the way for social media’s presence today. As it evolved I have always held a very strong opinion on the positives it has brought us. Remaining connected to loved ones a world away is incredibly valuable in my opinion. (This is why I love #Stories so much) • It’s not all good though. There’s increasing evidence to show constant sharing of #livingmybestlife on Instagram is likely having negative impacts on most people’s mental health and well-being. 24/7/365 connectedness may not be as purely net positive as I once thought. • Maybe we all need a bit more analog living. • All of this made me realize that since getting @facebook in 2004 the only breaks I’ve had were from being ‘out of service’. So, for a yet to be completely determined amount of time I’m going to disconnect from all those zero attention consumptive apps (IG, FB, @twitter, @tiktok).
